Self Care Habits That Changed My Life | Carla Kiley
One of my goals in 2020 was to simply take better care of myself. I knew I was dropping the ball when it came to sticking to habits that made me feel good, not only in my body, but in my mind. I decided to keep my goal pretty open-ended so I could adjust my habit to my life. These are the top 5 self-care habits that changed my life.
Going to Therapy. I can’t stress enough that therapy is the single best way to change your thought patterns and ultimately change your whole life. I spent most of 2020 going to a therapist weekly and gained a whole new perspective on life. I am more peaceful overall, but also feel more equipped to handle what life throws my way. If you’re local to the Montgomery Co, MD area, I’d be happy to give you a recommendation to the practice I used.
Buying clothes that fit my body. A simple way to take care of yourself is to make sure you have clothes that fit your body, no matter what shape it is. There is nothing worse than wearing a pair of jeans that feel too tight and make you feel bad all day long. Instead, grab an affordable pair of jeans on your next target run so you have something you feel confident and comfortable in.
Clean up your space. Spent five minutes in the morning and evening tidying up your space. Not only will your home look better, eliminating visual clutter will make your mind feel more at peace. Find a place for the little items that clutter the top of your dresser, clear off your countertops before you go to bed, and take a few minutes to wipe down your sink at the end of the day.
Take the extra step. We all have a certain level of self-care that happens daily (like brushing our teeth or taking a shower) but try to take it on step further. Treat yourself to a great body scrub or paint your nails a fun color. These little steps really add up and make a difference to your body and your mind. It’s kind of like a bunch of little things that remind you that you’re worth it.
Invest time in a hobby. One of the best things I spent time on in 2020 was developing new hobbies. Working on an embroidery project or planning out my garden was the perfect way to actively unwind and get to use the creative side of my brain. Even though my job is fairly creative, I spend more of my day managing a schedule, having phone calls, and answering emails than I do actually creating. Having a fun hobby is not only awesome for yourself, it also opens you up to having a community around that hobby. I’m currently working on a whole post all about hobbies to try in 2020.
I hope this was helpful and I hope you give some of these ideas a try! You’ll never regret taking better care of yourself, especially when life is extra stressful and crazy like it is now.
