One of the best things I did in 2020 was dive into new hobbies. We had LOTS more time at home during 2020 but I still had to push myself to get off my phone and turn off netflix so I could put my energy into something better. For me, having hobbies gave me a sense of purpose outside my job (which is good because I’m self-employed and its not always stable) AND gave me something to connect with others about. Whether it was talking embroidery with my friend Alexis or sharing fresh baked bread with my family, hobbies bring people together and give you a sense of community.
Here are 5 of my favorite hobbies to try in 2021!
Paint By Numbers. This one is one of the simplest options because all you need to do is order a kit off Amazon or Etsy. There are tons to choose from and something for everyones style. I ordered this one and this one because I thought they would look good framed in my house one day. I love working on one of these when I’ve had a stressful day because it helps you unwind and relax.

Embroidery. Embroidery is has been one of my top favorite hobbies this year and for good reason! It’s very customizable and moves quickly. I love that I can start a little hoop and finish it within a few hours. I made a bunch of small hoops as ornaments for holiday gifts and everyone LOVED them. I am currently working on one where I stitch Max and I’s wedding vows. You can see my Pinterest board of ideas here.
What you need to get started:
Bread Making. This one got pretty popular last spring, and for good reason! Making bread is fun because it’s actually a bit of a challenge (especially when you attempt sourdough!) If you’re looking for an extra easy route, I love using my breadmaker to make bread for dinner. Recently, I decided to attempt to make a sourdough starter so I can get back into sourdough bread!

Knitting. What is cozier for winter then knitting! I started knitting years ago and its something I always have around. Its simple, once you get the hang of it, and can be really methodic and relaxing. I would suggest starting small with something like a scarf or potholder. Here’s a video to show how to start a knitting project and do a simple stitch!

Gardening. 2020 was my year of gardening and I loved it. I thought at some point over the year I would get annoyed with having to keep up a whole garden but instead I just ended up wanting to plant more and more. Gardening is great because you can do it at so many different scales – from pots on a deck or patio to long rows in your back yard. I’m already starting to plan for my spring garden and I can’t wait until temps start to warm up!
